Interviews - Channel One
ChannelOne.com, interview by Stephanie L. Smith (2001, ChannelOne.com)

ChannelOne.com caught up with the 16-year-old star of 7th Heaven and found out what's really important to him: Family, friends and... his brand new driver's license. Get the full scoop:

Ch1: You're guest anchoring on Channel One today. Do you keep on top of current events and the news?
DG: I try to, as best I can. I was watching when the most recent tragedy happened on September 11. We got a phone call really early in the morning from a friend of ours. We ran into the room and turned [the TV] on and saw the second plane hit live. I was just speechless. I'm from New York, and I have a lot of family in New York. I was there during Christmas, at the Twin Towers, looking up at them thinking, 'Man, these things are gonna be there forever.' It's ironic.

Ch1: How has your life changed since the attacks on September 11?
DG: It's made me more aware of the fact that not everything is so nice and happy. [While] I'm going to work and while I'm going out with my friends, there are people somewhere in the world who are planning things like that. It makes you more cautious about everything.

Ch1: You spend a lot of time working. What do you do when you're not there?
DG: When I'm not on the set, I go home and finish up my homework, [then] jump in my truck and go out. I hate being routine. I'll call up my friends, see where they're at and we'll go from there. In my neighborhood, there's not a whole lot to do. There's the mall and two bowling alleys, and that's what everyone does, so we stay away from those places. We try to do our own thing.

Ch1: So you've got your driver's license and a truck! Has that improved your social life?
DG: Oh, completely and utterly! Before I had a license, it was hard to get out and see my friends. My dad [would say], "Don't worry, be patient." When you can't drive, you're limited to your block and your neighborhood, so you have to get your parents to take you places. But then you get time restraints because they've got to pick you up. Now it's like, 'Alright, be home at 11. Bye!'

Ch1: What's it been like having everyone watch you grow up on camera?
DG: It's an eerie feeling. It's strange how people come up to me and treat me like they've known me for years, and I have no clue who they are. Everyone thinks they know me, but it's more like they know my character [Simon]. Which, of course, I put a lot of me into; but he's not me [and that's not] the way I act.

Ch1: Simon's getting to be a little bit more of a rebel this season. Are you enjoying the change?
DG: Yes! It's great! They always say it's more fun to be the bad guy. I get to have an attitude, and that's not something that you get to see on our show a whole lot.

Ch1: Any hints about what's coming this season for Simon?
DG: Well, [he'll] get into a power battle with Eric [his dad] over Simon's personal life. He wants to be out with his friends, and Eric's trying to get him to realize that you have to be with the family sometimes. It's going to be a lot of fun.

Ch1: What's in the future for you?
DG: My ideal plan is to graduate my high school and [get into college] early acceptance. I want to graduate from USC film school in the path of Spielberg, Lucas and Howard.

Ch1: So you want to direct?
DG: I want to direct, and I want to produce and I want to write, as well as act. Hopefully, as my ultimate goal, I'll get [to direct, produce and star in] a project that I wrote!
